Pastor Rick Sikma
U.S. Senate
Alaska |
1. When and how did you become Christian?
Rick Sikma: "I was raised in a loving Christian home. One day, when I
was eight, my father told me, “You can’t get to Heaven on my coattails. You need
to trust in Jesus yourself to be saved. He must be Lord of your life, not just
savior of your soul.” One cold February day in 1962, I asked Jesus to come into
my heart. I told Him that He would be in control of my life and that I would do
what He wanted me to do. Little did I know that it would lead me into
ministry... into Kenya, Uganda, Russia, Thailand and Burma… and the United
States Senate."
2. How did becoming Christian change you?
Rick Sikma: "Being a Christian has helped me to rely on God rather
than myself. I have realized that God can take me places that I could never go
on my own, and that He would take me through all situations and give me the
strength to endure."
3. How would you describe your relationship with Jesus
today?
Rick Sikma: "We are best friends. Without ceasing and moment by moment."
4. In the past 12 months, how many minutes have you
spent in prayer with Jesus daily?
Rick Sikma: "Prayer for me is constant and cannot be measured in
minutes, but hours."
5. In the past 12 months, how many minutes of
Bible-reading have you averaged daily?
Rick Sikma: "I average one half hour to an hour daily, some days
much more."
6. In the past 12 months, what percentage of your income
have you returned to God?
Rick Sikma: "I tithe 10% or more, along with giving for offerings
and missions needs."
7. In the past 12 months, how many non-Christians have
you told why Jesus died?
Rick Sikma: "I have not kept count. Only God knows. But am at
least fairly certain that I was able to share with over 5000 in one day while
speaking in Thailand."
8. In the past 12 months, how many church services have
you attended?
Rick Sikma: "Every Sunday plus special services during the week."
9. Which church do you attend and what is its website
address?
Rick Sikma: "Freedom in Christ Church [in North Pole, Alaska]."
10. What has been your greatest failure as a Christian?
Rick Sikma: "My failures have been forgiven. However, if I could
have any regrets, it would be those times that I did not obey and saw the
consequences of my inaction."
11. What is the greatest challenge you face today as a
Christian?
Rick Sikma: "It is easy to know the promises of God, but much more
challenging to believe and trust in those promises."
12. Which gift(s) has the Holy Spirit given to you, and
what fruits has it borne?
Rick Sikma: "He has given me gifts of prophecy, healing, tongues,
wisdom, knowledge, and faith. Fruit: Seeing people set free and delivered by His
grace and mercy. Watching them grow in the gifts He has also given to them. And
I have been personally involved in the salvation of at least one thousand
people, that I am aware of."
13. Do you believe Jesus is God or the Son of God?
Rick Sikma: "Jesus is both the God in the Flesh, and the Son of
God. (Hebrews 1:5-8)"
14. Do you believe Jesus was born to a virgin, died and rose from the dead?
Rick Sikma: "Yes (Matthew 1:18; 2:1; 1Cor. 15:1-8)."
15. Do you believe Jesus ascended to God the Father and will return riding on clouds?
Rick Sikma: "Yes (Acts 1:9-11)."
16. Do you believe heaven and hell are places that really exist?
Rick Sikma: "Yes (Revelation 20:1-15)."
17. By what criteria do you believe people go to heaven or hell?
Rick Sikma: "The Bible is clear about the result of those who
reject Jesus as the Son of God. (John 3:16-17; Revelation 20:11-15)."
18. How many of which book(s) do you believe to be
inspired by God & without error?
Rick Sikma: "All 66 books referenced in the Bible - Genesis through
Revelation."
19. The beliefs of which well-known Christian leader
alive today resemble your beliefs?
Rick Sikma: "Billy Graham."
20. Which well-known Christian leader who lived in the
past 1900 years do you admire and why?
Rick Sikma: "Billy Graham has talked the walk and walked the talk. His
ability to remain humble given the power, recognition and influence he has been
privy to are a testimony to his calling and to Whom he serves."
21. Under what circumstances, if any, do you believe abortion should
be permitted?
Rick Sikma: "None. We cannot choose which situation where we will
support the rights of the unborn (rape/incest). If there is a true danger to the
mother due to ectopic pregnancy, uterine hemorrhage or the like, then at this
point, it would not be a matter to be considered under the law of abortion."
22. What is your position on same sex marriage?
Rick Sikma: "It is not a civil right, it is a moral issue. I do
not agree with same sex marriage. The Bible cannot be contested or compromised
on this issue."
23. What is your position on prayers and Bible studies
in schools, and why?
Rick Sikma: "Our country was founded on a belief in God and the
Judeo Christian faith. Rejecting that foundation weakens the whole structure.
The First Amendment states that we have the freedom OF religion, not freedom
from it. Those who wish to exercise their faith through prayer and study should
not be criticized. We have seen in public schools, other faiths being granted
time to pray on their mats facing east at sunrise, without such criticism.
Evidence is overwhelming by those schools allowed to stand on this foundation,
and by the strength of character, ethics and morals of those students and
teachers willing to take that stand."
24. If (re-)elected, what will you seek to do about
(Internet) pornography and the violence in the media, and how?
Rick Sikma: "This is a situation we will never be able to stop.
However, we can empower the parents, teachers and students by equipping them
with the necessary tools to overcome it. Again, ethics and morals must be
encouraged to and by parents and teachers. A generation of “free-lovers”, born
and raised during the time of removal of prayer from schools, were not given a
solid foundation on which to stand."
25. If (re-)elected, what will you seek to do about our
health care system, and how?
Rick Sikma: "We are instructed to take care of our widowed,
fatherless and poor. (Zechariah 7:9-11) However, government has made the current
system of caring for those in need so complicated, that one would need a lawyer
to interpret how to use it to their benefit. Restructure is absolutely needed.
At this point, it would be necessary to start from scratch to build a system
that is user-friendly to the actual end-user."
26. If (re-)elected, what will you seek to do about
poverty and corporate greed & how?
Rick Sikma: "As stated throughout scripture we are instructed to
care for the poor. (Job 15:16-17; 20:10; Ps. 35:10; Luke 4:18, etc.) Again, the
current system does not work. People have been encouraged “not to get involved”,
and apathy has been rewarded. We must train and equip our children to care. To
care for anyone other than ourselves is no longer the norm of society. We must
turn our eyes to Him and what He has instructed and taught us about caring for
others (and Revelation 12:11)."
27. If (re-)elected, what will you seek to achieve in
Iraq and Afghanistan, and how?
Rick Sikma: "The Iraqi and Afghani government leaders must be
given a deadline for the withdrawal of our troops. However, if we cannot
absolutely secure US borders, then this war we are fighting to protect the US,
will only come at us through our back door."
28. If (re-)elected, what will you seek to achieve in
Iran and North Korea, and how?
Rick Sikma: "Negotiation is not possible with any country who
stands on a faith, philosophy or religion that teaches its followers to destroy
those who are unbelievers or don’t see eye to eye. Sanctions should be issued to
show them we are serious about protecting our freedom. There has been too much
compromise."
29. What other issue is a key priority for your
constituents and how will you resolve it?
Rick Sikma: "Nationwide, energy is the only issue. We are in a
state of emergency and we must act quickly and decisively before we are unable
to offer any relief to the people. Short term, lower fuel taxes and subsidize
fuel to the people. Mexico is doing this… with our money! Long term, lesson
restrictions on American developers and encourage proven alternative domestic
fuel resources."
30. What qualifies you as the best person to represent
your constituents?
Rick Sikma: "I’m one of them, and have been for 67 years. I am not
indebted to big government, and will fight to protect the rights of the people.
I know and stand by the United States Constitution as the standard and litmus
test for all laws and bills being passed. If they do not line up, then I will
vote against them. The number one qualification of any leader is an ability to
listen, not just talk. After 30 years of being in ministry, listening to the
needs and concerns of the people is my privilege and responsibility.
"Before God, I affirm my answers above to be true and without embellishment or exaggeration."
